In this study they look at the mechanism of how acupuncture helps reduce hyperandrogenism and improve fat metabolism in women with PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome). Both higher testosterone and blood/sugar levels are associated with a particular type of PCOS. They think that this affect of acupuncture on these processes “may be achieved by reducing the secretion of neurotransmitters in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and interfering with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its cortisol release. “
