Research on using daily oral probiotics during pregnancy to help prevent recurrent spontaneous preterm delivery.

Probiotics

In this study they looked at women with a history of recurrent spontaneous preterm delivery (sPTD) who were pregnant again. They started them on a daily combo of 3 probiotics orally near the end of the first trimestre through to 37 weeks of pregnancy. The recurrency rate of sPTD was 14.9 % , compared to a national average of 22.3% was significant. I would say that this was especially so because the national average is for all pregnancies while the cohort (315 women across 31 different centres) in this study all had a history of sPTD. An amazing result considering it’s such a low risk and low cost intervention for such a potentially serious problem that has such profound impact on the patients and material cost for the health care system of caring for premature babies.
